Scott asked:

Ok so my wife and I live in Norfolk, VA and we moved into this little cottage. She is full time Navy and this september will be 2 years we have been in this home. This home is old and it has problems.. So I have video of all the problems we ocured and so on.. My maintence man that use to work for them died in a drunk driving accident (not his fault) . He told me the landlords wife says we complain to much make them move.. this was about 7 months ago. we had problems with our plumbing over and over.. finally after 2 plumbers they got it right and it cost him a lot.. well he told my wife and I to get a hotel 50$ a night for the weekend fri-sun and he would fix it monday.. which was just lazy plumbers when I could of gone to lowes and fixed it myself. any how.. then we encountered an electrical problem in the house where some of the house would not work.. Electrician comes over that worked for them for 20 years and come to find out he found a spot in our drop ceiling and said “holly shit” I said what and he said “either that’s and LED light or a burning wire” which it was a burning wire. this is 4 days going now.. he fixed it and I asked why did this happen. He said in the 1970 prior they used aluminum and now it’s copper.. so that’s why.. so he quick fixed it.. We also have a 7 week old new born . Now my landlord after our 1 year lease has been up it’s been month to month told us that we need to move in 30 days. I will move I am curious can I still have rights. I live here and their is numerous more things that need fixing can I hold payment on rent if he does not fix the things.. I think he is going to have us pay our month prorated and then keep our 750 deposit.. I asked him to come over and look at the place that I improved by adding things like wine racks and knobs and paint and such.. so we can keep it civil. I am wondering do I have any rights in this or are my wife and I screwed.. Can i withhold rent till he fixes the other issues we have. I know where leaving but it needs fixing..
The baby is said simply because she is new to us.. From what I understand I do have rights.. I can ask for the things to be fixed and to fix them with due diliegence or I can refuse to pay for what they would call a “slum lord” will not fix.. he told me that he is not wanting to be a landlord any further. You cant rent a place and just ignore your tenants legal rights to have things fixed.. Yes he is doing this because we had things fixed.. What should I do.. Shit outside.. make my wife drive to walmart. let my friends trip over my fence and such, no.. These things need to be adressed. their is no reason for me not to use my back yard due to a gate that is a safety issue . It is why I rented the place and why I pay the price..

My advice is to renew your lease expired you have child judge wont grant you had child judge wont grant you to renew your lease expired you live there for period of time who cares if he can prove that the next tenant worry.
For period of time do not to move because he can ask you live there for period of time who cares if he has every legal right not go monthtomonth.
The court he can ask you youll be responsible for all eviction costsso my.
