Best wine to give parents as a gift?
Filed Under wine racks | 6 Comments
My parents collect wine from their trips they take (japan, germany, australia, califorinia, carnival cruises, etc.)
I bought them a wine rack for xmas and would like to buy them each a bottle of wine. However I know NOTHING when it comes to wine.
What is a decent wine to give as a xmas gift, My dad is big into harleys and collects harley things also so I may get him a bottle of “v-twin zin” which is put out by harley davidson.
But any ideas of what to get for my mom? I want something different not just a plain wine.

Do you like Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects? If so, then construct your own wine rack. It provides you with an easy way to store and display the various wines that you have. Also, building it is probably much easier than you might expect. Furthermore, DIY projects can save you a ton of money, which you could dedicate to increasing your selection of wines. Here are the simple tips to build a rack:
1. Choose the size of the wine rack that you want to build
Wine racks can range in size. They can be small enough to fit on a wall in your home. Mid-size win racks fit easily onto areas such as your kitchen countertop. Meanwhile, larger racks sit on the ground, as a bookshelf would. This type of wine rack can store the greatest number of bottles.
2. Create a wine rack that holds the bottles horizontally
Why is this important? There are a few benefits. Firstly, this helps to keep bits of debris from entering the bottle’s neck. Also, keeping the bottles horizontal will ensure that the bottle’s cork will remain wet.
3. Construct a wine rack that is a minimum of 7 deep.
You may consider buying wall racks if you struggle with DIY projects. If not, remember that the deeper it is, the less the bottles will protrude from the wine rack. This will make the rack sturdier.
4. Select certain slots to accommodate a high number of bottles
After deciding on how many bottles you want to store, determine which type of slot you want to use. The two best types are the flat-box slot and the diamond-slot. These types of slots are ideal, as you can hold many bottles in a single slot. If you are trying to maximize the number of bottles you can squeeze into a small space, then these types of slots are ideal.
5. Consider slots large enough for a single bottle, for convenience
If you want to access your wine bottles easier and faster, then take this step.
6. Screw holes before installing screws
Do this to avoid cracking the wood of the wine rack, as you drill holes into it.
7. Consider buying a wine rack if necessary
If you lack the time to build your own rack, then consider buying it. These racks are available in a wide variety of styles, sizes, and bottle capacities.
8. Verify that your wine rack is sturdy
In particular, when creating slots for multiple bottles, ensure that the rack can support full bottles’ weight.
9. Use the right wood if the wine will sit in a cellar
This will prevent the wood from experiencing rotting, mildew, etc.
10. Add slots in your wine rack, for glasses
This will further serve as a space-saver.
One of the most practical wine racks remains a wall decoration one. However, if you are a DIY fan, then build your own wine rack!

“You Got the Right One, Baby.” Musician Ray Charles made the song famous in Diet Pepsi’s TV ads during the early 1990s. When buying a wine rack, how do you know if you have the “right one?” It is important to search for a wine rack that will best meet your particular needs. While certain racks may work well for your friends and relatives, they may not be ideal for you. Here are some tips to consider, when searching for the perfect rack (for you):
1. Consider the purpose of your wine rack
You can place it in various rooms of your home, including:
• dining room
• entertainment room
• family room
• kitchen
• living room
Determine if you mainly need a rack to store bottles, or to function also as decor for the room. For instance, you can use wall racks to add some pizzazz to virtually any wall of your home.
2. Consider various traits of the wall racks:
here are some traits to consider when examining wine racks:
Capacity: Make sure that the capacity meets your needs. For instance, wall mounted wine racks tend to have a capacity of one, two, or three bottles. If you select a standard-sized rack, ensure that it is large enough for the typical number of bottles you need.
Features:
For full-size racks, consider if the wine rack can store glasses and other accessories.
Size:
Verify that you have enough space to store and use the wine rack. In particular, there should be enough space to add and remove bottles. Consider a space-saving wall rack to hold your top 1-2 types of wines.
Stability:
This is certainly the most important issue when selecting a wine rack. Make sure that it remains stable when adding and removing bottles. Also, it should be stable whether you have one or several of them in it.
Style:
Ensure that both the material and the design of the rack complement the decor of the room in which it is. For instance, if you use a wall wine rack, it should match up with the other wall decor.
Strength:
Ensure that the manufacturer used quality materials to construct the rack. Also, verify that it used outstanding craftsmanship. Make these checks whether you examine full-size racks or wall mounted ones.
3. Consider the location of the wine rack
Location is an important consideration when you select a wine rack. Consider whether you have enough room for it, including a wrought iron one. Decide if you need a stationary or mobile rack. Contemplate whether you need it for storage or display. If it is for the latter function, then consider a wall wine rack. Finally, consider whether your bottle collection will grow.
When selecting a wine rack, you have several issues to consider. Considering the aforementioned issues will help you to narrow down your choices. Then you can select the “right one”!

For wine to mature in the proper way, you’ll need to have the right humidity, temperature, light condition, and movement. Whenever you are storing wine for any amount of time, you’ll need to ensure that the wine is in a safe place. Even though there are a few ways that you can store wine, none are safer or smarter than using a wine rack.
When you choose your wine rack, you should always remember to choose one that will store your wine properly. There are a several styles to choose from, including those that stack, wall mounts, and side mounts. You should also pay attention to size as well, as the sizes range from storing a few bottles to storing hundreds. You’ll also have a lot of varieties and designs to select from, all of which depend on your needs and your space.
Among the best types of wine racks are the horizontal racks. Contrary to what many may think, vertical racks aren’t a good choice for storing your wine. Wine that is stored on vertical racks are stored vertically, which means that the cork will dry out and eventually start to shrink, bringing air into the wine and ruining it. On the other hand, vertical racks can come in handy when storing wine for short periods of time, or wine that is best consumed young.
Tilted racks are another type of rack you should avoid using, as they can dry out the corks or deposit the sediments too close to the cork. For your wine storing needs, you should always go with a horizontal rack. Horizontal racks will keep the cork moist, and keep unwanted air from making contact with the wine. The sediment will fall towards the side of the bottle, preventing spillage when you pop the cork. Horizontal racks are also very affordable and you can always add more racks to the design with little to no problem.
The materials for wine racks are normally wood or metal. You can hang them from ceilings, mount them on the wall, or simply place them on the floor. Metal racks are the strongest, although wood is more flexible. Wooden racks provide a bit more storage, for the simple fact that you can always add to them. Wood racks are also visually appealing, durable, and provide plenty of strength.
All in all, a wine rack is a fine investment for anyone who appreciates wine. There are various sizes to choose from, all of which are very affordable. The small to medium sizes work best for homes, while the large styles are best for commercial settings. No matter where you keep your wine - you can count on a wine rack to keep your wine stored for years to come.

Wine racks and storage options come in many different styles and purchasing budgets. Whether you are an avid wine aficionado, an aficionado in the making, a wine hobbyist, or someone who wishes to protect valuable vintages from prying eyes or place a cherished wine collection of sophistication and refinement on exhibit — the where and how’s of wine storage and wine rack placement is an issue.
It’s important to have an attractive and durable wine rack storage system. It is a given that anyone interested in having a growing wine collection would not want to do so behind a kitchen cabinet.
Most oenophiles (a disciplined devotion to wine, with strict traditions of consumption and appreciation, simply put, a lover of wine) long for a cellar of stocked wine racks, and since digging out a cave in most instances for a wine cellar is impractical and exorbitantly expensive, stand alone wine rack options in a good environment is a good place to start. You do not have to live over an arching grotto, or have the budget of an eighteenth century land baron, to cellar wine. You just have to understand the basics of wine storage pertaining to temperature, humidity and light to do it right.
An important factor with wines is the place where you will store the bottles to age.
Few environments are as potentially destructive to wine as the home. Too much humidity causes mold and damages the labels. This is also why cellars are often tiled rather than carpeted, as carpeting holds moisture facilitating mold. Humidity as high as 70 percent is desirable so corks don’t dry out. When allowed to dry out, corks shrink slightly allowing air into the bottles and oxidizing of the wine occurs. This is also why the wine racks store bottles on their sides: the wine keeps the cork wet, and the oxygen out.
Darkness is preferable, even though most wine is bottled in colored glass to protect it against most light damage. The proper storage temperature of 50-60F enables wine to age slowly to its full complexity. Excess heat cooks off its finer characteristics, while too much chill retards its maturation.
Wine racks are available in a wide assortment of materials, sizes and styles to suit any situation or decor for both home and commercial use: wood, metals like wrought iron and stainless steel, wire, wall mounted or hanging as well as attractive wine furniture pieces to complement the home, restaurant, or business.
Low-cost wine racks can be bought prefabricated or in do-it-yourself assembly kits.
Wine racks made of stainless steel and wire grids are less expensive. These decorative units can have a place for short term storage and display. If you are in the business to sell wine, be sure to showcase your collection with the best retail wine racking possible to help you market and sell more.
The warmth of wood is a popular choice for wine racks to display and store your fine wines. Softwoods such as Pine and Douglas Fir are more prone to warping but usually do not pose a problem if obtained from a good supplier using a premium grade who will stand behind the wine racks’ integrity, making these good, low-cost options, mainly because they’re easier to work with, and lighter to ship than hardwoods.
Distinctive wine racks also come in Maple and Red Oak. However, the best are made from more expensive rainforest woods, such as Californian Redwood. Redwood wine racks absorb moisture with little warping.
The wine rack should be in a cool, dark area of the house, such as the basement, cold storage room or closet. The basement is often the best place in the house for your wine since concrete heats up and cools down slowly. But, be aware that by the end of each season, accumulated heat or cold in the concrete can still make the conditions less than ideal for long-term wine storage.
It’s important to ensure that the room is dark, properly insulated to control the temperature and free from sources of vibration such as furnaces or fridges. Avoid leaving food, cardboard boxes or paint in the cellar. The chemicals in these materials break down over time and it’s possible their odors can seep into the wine through the cork.
Don’t have a full-sized room available to devote to a wine cellar? You can transform a closet or pantry into a customized mini wine cellar - complete with cooling unit and cellar door should you choose.
Buying a wine fridge suits anyone who has limited space.
A wine fridge is temperature and humidity controlled. The kitchen fridge is too cold and isn’t humid enough for wine long term. Wine fridges come in half, full and double sizes, as well as large walk-in style vaults.
Enjoying wine is about celebrating, relaxing, enjoying conviviality and all that it encompasses — taste, history, science, culture, friendship and intimacy. So reach for that special bottle from the wine rack and enjoy!
Erica
