What is the best way to store wine without a cellar?

Suzy-Q asked:
I have just started to collect wines. Rather buy expensive wine on sale. I kon’t know anything about wine, it just started calling to me. I don’t think I have had a glass of wine in 3 months. I do not have a wine cellar or wine rack. Should wine stand up or lay down during storage? What temperture? Should I keep it in the refridgerator? I love looking at the bottles. Have I become weird?

I have an unfinished wood wine rack that I’d like to stain but I don’t know the wood species?

Mel asked:
The piece is totally unfinished and never used, my mother was trying to sell it in a garage sale. I read a few websites about choosing a stain and it mentioned that you should know the wood species and whether it’s open grained or not. I have no experience in this area, is there a way to determine the species and grain? Any general tips are also appreciated. Thanks!
It is a very light color and it did leave a dent when I pressed my nail into it. It’s a collapsible rack, so I think I probably will bring it to the hardware store to get their advice. Thanks everyone!

I saw a picture sometime back where a large wooden wine rack was used for storage of shoes. I need advice

Gal asked:
Okay I saw this picture and the idea was wonderful. It was a large antique style wine rack with built in boxes for the wine bottles- open ones and about 40-45 boxes. It looked so unnique. I am thinking of using the same idea as I have a long narrow passage in my new apartment that could go waste if we didnt use it as a shoe rack. I also want to put a bench there to sit down and remove your shoes.
I saw some contemporary ones at target and walmart, but they dont have that feel What I do like about this one is that it has a drawer on top for socks etc

Let me know what you think about this whole idea.
Our apartment is one 1 BR and about 700 sq feet only and we have about 30-40 pairs of shoes ( I know-vain couple!:-)))

Is it acceptable to rack wine off its lees before fermentation is complete? There is ~ 3″ of sediment?

overrocking asked:
I have 5 gal of stawberry wine with a sg of 1.025 the air lock is still bubbling nicely however there is almost 3 inches sediment and lees that have dropped out of the wine since it was transfered into the secondary 3 weeks ago. What is the chance the I will get off flavors from leaving the wine on the sediment or get a stuck fermentation from racking it?

How long should wine sit upright after you bottle it before you lay it on it’s side on the wine rack?

van asked:
I bottle 10 gallons today and want it off my counters..
I don’t have any sediment in the wine. It is crystal clear. I usually leave it sitting upright for a few days but wondered if that long was necessary.
